Requirements for British medical schools: The Ultimate Guide

In this table I have collated information on every medical school in the UK for undergraduate medicine. Please note that not all of this information will be correct depending on when you are reading it. The GCSE, A level, IB, UKCAT and BMAT requirements are listed. I have tried to condense this as much as possible as it is very long, as a result you may need to visit individual websites. This should help you with your immediate shortlist of universities. Most medical schools require Chemistry and biology and then one other subject. General studies and critical thinking are not accepted at any medical schools. Subject combinations such as biology and human biology are also not allowed. In my next post I will be writing about each university, giving a rough outline on what the requirements are and what statistics I would want to have if I was applying to each university.

The Science Double Award may substitute all sciences at GCSE. Birmingham	The subjects that will be scored are: English Mathematics  Biology and Chemistry (or dual award science), plus two additional GCSEs (any subject). A minimum grade of B must be offered and the scores allocated to the different grades will be in the ratio of 4:2:1 (for A*, A, B, respectively). For each of the two unspecified subjects, a score of 2 will be allocated when an A* grade has been obtained (lower grades will not receive a score). The total GCSE score will be scaled to a maximum of 7.0.	A*AA but predicted AAA	Total 36, minimum 5 in any subject. At Higher Level: 18 points including 6's in Chemistry and Biology. At Standard Level: English and Maths if not offered at HL. Brighton and Sussex	More A*/A is better	AAA including Biology and Chemistry	36 points with both Biology and Chemistry at minimum grade 6 at Higher level.	They score the BMAT out of 28 (9 marks for Section 1, 9 for Section 2 and 5 marks for each element of Section 3) we then rank all applicants according to their total score out of 28 and work down the rankings to fill our interview places.	N/A	For 2016 entry, in the bmat applicants without contextual data who scored 16 or above were invited for interview (the cut off score will vary each year).
Bristol University	Five subjects at grade A*/A including Mathematics, English Language and two sciences.	AAA including A in Chemistry and A in another lab-based science	36 overall with 18 points at Higher Level including 6 at Higher Level in Chemistry and 6 at Higher Level in another lab-based science.	N/A	There is no official cut-off score.	We would suggest that applicants have a minimum of two weeks work experience in a care-based setting. We feel that suitable work experience and subsequent reflection is important to inform a candidate about their potential vocation and what a career in healthcare entails.
Cambridge	Pass GCSEs although most successful candidates usually achieve many A*s	A*A*A A Levels in Chemistry and one of Biology/Human Biology, Physics, Mathematics. .	40-42 points, with 776 at Higher Level	Colleges vary with how they use the BMAT score. Check the individual college.	N/A	Most applicants have at least three science/mathematics A Levels and some Colleges require this and/or particular subjects. See College websites for details
Cardiff	Score the top 9 GCSEs. These 9 must include English Language (and/or Welsh Language), the Sciences and Mathematics. We award 3 points for A*, 2 points for an A and 1 point for a B. We do not award points for short courses. Applications will be ranked according to their score and a cut-off point is decided which depends on the overall standard of applications we get in any one year. Over the last 5 years the cut-off score has ranged between 24 to 26 points.	AAA Applicants who have completed A-level qualifications that fulfil or exceed our typical A-level offer (AAA) will therefore be considered with lower GCSE scores. We score achieved A-levels (3 points for A* and 2 points for A).	36 points. A minimum of 19 points must be achieved in the Higher Level subjects. Two sciences (from Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and either Mathematics or Statistics but not Mathematical Studies) must be offered at Higher Level, with a score of 7, 6, 6 points in each, one of which must be Chemistry or Biology. Dundee	Good pass in biology required if not offered at A/AS level	AAA at A-Level (A2), to include chemistry and another science subject (from biology, physics or mathematics).	37 points (minimum) including 6, 6, 6 at Higher level, to include chemistry and another science (from biology, physics or mathematics) at Higher Level, plus three subjects at Standard Level with an average of grade 6, to include Biology at least to Standard level 6.	N/A	All applicants must sit the UKCAT test in their year of application unless certified exempt because there is no testing centre in your country.  There is no minimum cut-off score.
East Anglia	All applicants must have a minimum of six GCSE (or EU / International equivalent) passes at grade A or above to include English, Mathematics and two Science subjects. GCSE short courses are not accepted. They usually review your best 9 results (to include English, Mathematics and two sciences). They will include only one maths, up to two English and up to three single science subjects or a double science award. Repeat GCSEs are accepted.	AAA including Biology/Human Biology and either Physics or Chemistry. Science A levels must include a pass in the practical element.	36 points with 666 at Higher Level to include Biology and one other science from Chemistry /Physics	N/A	No minimum cut-off score for the UKCAT, component scores are considered. Edinburgh	Average applicant offers 6A*s, top third have 8-11A*s. Applied Science is not accepted.	AAA including Chemistry and one subject from Biology, Mathematics and Physics (Biology preferred).	Overall score of 37 points including 667 at HL in Chemistry and at least one other science subject (Biology preferred). Biology should be taken to at least SL.	N/A	The Selection Committee uses your UKCAT score to make a more informed decision about your application. Once all the scores are received we rank them, divide the groups into octiles and allocate a score. The points are then added to your total score to contribute towards your final ranking. .
Exeter	GCSE English and GCSE Mathematics with a minimum pass of Grade C.	A*AA-AAA	38-36	N/A	No threshold, holistic use of UKCAT alongside other factors.
Glasgow	B’s in English Science and Maths but preference is given to those with higher grades	AAA	38 points Chemistry HL6 AND Biology HL6 AND Mathematics or Physics at HL (if it is not possible to sit Mathematics or Physics at HL, then SL will be considered at 6 points). Mathematics Studies is NOT accepted where Mathematics is required. Hull	Academic score given based upon the best eight achieved grades at GCSE or equivalent Year 11 qualifications.	AAA in Biology and Chemistry	You must have 6,6,5 in three Higher-level subjects, including Biology and Chemistry. You must also have an overall total of 36 points for the diploma.	N/A	Situational Judgement Test Band of 4 (the lowest band) will not be considered. Prior to interview Prior to interview we use your total UKCAT score alongside your GCSE results in order to decide who to invite to interview. For 2018 entry, we will award you a number of points based upon your total UKCAT score; we can only do this once we have received all UKCAT results. As UKCAT results are not released to universities until November, the number of points that each UKCAT score will receive as part of our Selection Procedure will not be determined until after the UCAS deadline. After interview Following interview, we make offers based primarily on interview performance, and we use the UKCAT Situational Judgement Test as an extra interview 'station'.
Imperial	No requirements	AAA in Biology, Chemistry and one other subject. Please note that a standard offer is likely to be A*AA.	We require 38 points overall, including 6 in Biology and 6 in Chemistry at higher level with English, grade 5 at Standard level.	BMAT cut-off scores are calculated each year. Keele	GCSE: a minimum of 5 at grade A (or 7) with a minimum of B (or 6) in Maths, English and Sciences	A levels in three subjects at grades of A*AA are required, must include a pass in the practical endorsement.	35 points from six academic subjects. Three grade 6 passes at IB Higher Level and grades of 6, 6, 5 at Standard Level are required	N/A	No cut off but used to determine borderline candiates.
Kings	B’s in GCSE science, maths and English	A*AA Biology and Chemistry are required	35 points overall (including TOK/EE) and three Higher Level subjects at 766	N/A	King’s does not have a threshold UKCAT score in any particular year, The Situational Judgement Test (SJT) is also taken into account when shortlisting.
Leeds	GCSE: 6 A* - B, including chemistry and biology (or dual science/double science), English language and mathematics, dual/double science, or science and additional science, or chemistry and biology	AAA including Chemistry	35 points overall, including 6 in 3 subjects at higher level, one of which must be chemistry.	Those in the top 20% will receive the full mark and those in the bottom 20% will receive the lowest mark available. The BMAT total score will be calculated from a sum of the scores achieved in section 1, 2 and 3 although section 3 will have half the weighting of the other sections as it will be revisited during the interview stage of the selection process. Leicester	You must have achieved at least a grade B in English Language, Mathematics, and two sciences, including Chemistry, or Double Science. GCSE performance into consideration when selecting applicants for interview but no specific number of A*s needed.	AAA	36 points overall, including three Higher Level subjects (including Chemistry and Biology), and three Standard Level subjects. Each subject must be passed with a minimum of six points.	N/A	We do not have a minimum UKCAT score you must achieve to be invited to interview. Band 4= immediate rejection
Liverpool	GCSEs in nine separate subject areas: attained by the end of Year 11 and at least a score of 15 points or better (where A*/A = 2; B = 1) from the nine and including:	A (Chemistry); A (Biology); A (third academic A level)	36 points to include 3 subjects at higher level; at least 6 and 6 in Biology and Chemistry and at least 6 in one other subject plus 3 further subjects at standard level, minimum of 5 points each	N/A	Band 4 usually get rejected pre-interview. Manchester	At least seven subjects are required at grade C or above; at least five must be at A or A*. English Language and Mathematics are required at GCSE minimum grade B.	AAA in the following subjects: Chemistry, plus one from Biology or Human Biology; Physics; Mathematics or Further Mathematics, plus one further rigorous subject	37 points are required overall to include core points with at least 766 at HL including Chemistry and minimum 555 at SL. Newcastle	Once the academic criteria have been met, academic achievement is not considered further in subsequent parts of the application process e.g. additional A levels or A* results or additional GCSE results are not considered.	AAA including Chemistry and/or Biology at A level and excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking. For Biology, Chemistry and Physics A levels, we require a pass in the practical element. If only one of Biology and/or Chemistry is offered at A level, the other should be offered at GCSE grade A or 7 (or Dual Award Science grade A or 7).	A minimum of 38 points including grade 5 in all subjects with Higher Level grade 6 in Chemistry or Biology. Score system: The IGCSE/GCSE's are scored as follows: A* = 2 points 7 (A) = 1 point 5 (B) = 0 points In top 8 subjects including triple science or double science, maths, English language and best subjects beyond these. Oxford	As many A*s as possible. ¾ of applicants have 60% A*s.	A*AA Candidates are required to achieve at least grade A in both Chemistry and at least one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics.	Overall score of 39 (including core points), and scores of 7, 6 and 6 in subjects taken at Higher Level Applicants are required to offer the following subjects at Higher Level: Chemistry (compulsory) AND At least one from Biology, Physics and Mathematics.	numerical ranking on the basis of GCSE performance and BMAT results (both quantitative and objective measures and equally weighted). If applicants had not taken GCSEs or IGCSEs ranking was based on BMAT score alone. This ranking formed the basis of an initial shortlist. In 2016, weightings were: section 1=40%, section 2=40%, and section 3=20%. In calculating the section 3 score, double weight was ascribed to the ‘Quality of content’ score and single weight given to the ‘Quality of English’ score (with A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, and X=0).	N/A
Plymouth	Applicants need to achieve 7 GCSE passes at grades A-C which must include English language, mathematics and either GCSE single and additional science or GCSE biology and chemistry. Queens Belfast	GCSE Mathematics minimum grade C and either GCSE Physics minimum grade C or GCSE Double Award Science minimum grades CC are required if not offered at AS-level or A-level. In considering applications, GCSE performance in the best 9 subjects will be scored with 4 points awarded for an A* (grades 8 and 9 on the new 9-1 grading scale) and 3 for an A (grade 7).	AAA at A-level + A in a fourth AS-level subject including A-level Chemistry plus at least one other A-level from Biology/Human Biology, Mathematics or Physics. Sheffield	You should have at least eight GCSE subjects at grades A*- C. Of these, you must have six A grades in GCSE subjects that have been taken in one sitting; Applicants taking GCSEs graded using the new numerical system will need to obtain eight GCSEs graded 9-4, of these you must have six 7 grades taken in one sitting.  A grade 4 is deemed equivalent of a grade C.  A combination of numerically and alphabetically graded GCSEs is acceptable;	AAA to include Chemistry and one other science (Maths, Physics, Biology or Psychology)	36 points overall with 6s in Higher Level subjects (to include Chemistry and another science subject) and no less than 4 in Standard level subjects.	N/A	In addition to the academic requirements, candidates must have achieved a score of 2460/3600 or above to be given further consideration. Candidates must meet BOTH the academic entry requirements AND the UKCAT entry requirements. The Situational Judgement Test (SJT) component is only considered for those applicants who are invited to attend a Multiple Mini Interview.
Southampton	six GCSEs at grade A or above, including either maths, biology and chemistry, or maths, additional science and science. English language is required at a minimum of grade B. St Andrews	We would expect applicants to offer a minimum of 5 A grades (or 5 grades of 7) at GCSE (or equivalent ) to be taken at one sitting and to be predicted to achieve at least the minimum grades required in the relevant school leaving qualification	AAA (Advanced levels) including Chemistry and one other of Biology, Mathematics or Physics.	Minimum: 38 points to include: Higher level: 3 passes at Grade 6,6,6 and Standard Level: 3 passes at Grade 6,6,6. Chemistry and one of either Biology, Mathematics or Physics must be offered at Higher Level. Biology, Mathematics and English must be offered at Standard Level if not offered at Higher Level.	N/A	The UKCAT test can vary each year. Please be aware that for the 2017 sitting of the test (used for 2018 entry), the Decision Analysis subtest will be included and scores will range from 1200 to 3600. For 2017 entry the lowest UKCAT score for applicants called to interview at St Andrews was 1800 (that equated to around 2400 in previous tests when all 4 subtests were included and the range was 1200 to 3600). For 2018 entry we won't know the likely UKCAT scores for those to be called to interview until we have assessed all applications.
St Georges	416 points from the top eight subjects (equivalent to an average of grade A). A*=58 A= 52 B= 46 C= 34 D= 28	AAA A level: Three subjects to include Chemistry and Biology or Human Biology.	Overall score of 36. 18 points at Higher Level, with a minimum score of 6 in at least one of Biology and/or Chemistry.	N/A	500 or above, in each section The 2018 entry minimum overall UKCAT score will be determined after the results have been published in November. We will not be using the 'Situational Judgement' (SJT) section for 2018 entry. Please note, for September 2018 we will not consider any extenuating circumstances in relation to UKCAT test scores.
UCL	grade B or above in both English Language and Mathematics . For candidates taking the new style of GCSEs with numerical outcomes rather than letter grades, the requirement is for a score of 6 in both English Language and Mathematics. UCL expects all UK applicants to offer a modern foreign language at GCSE grade C or equivalent .	Our standard conditional o ffer for 201 8 entry will be grades A*AA to include Chemistry and Biology.	Chemistry and Biology at Higher Level 39 overall. The grades for the three Higher subjects must make up at least 19 points and must include Biology and Chemistry , each with minimum score 6 . Scores below 5 in any subject are not acceptable .	No specific cut-off point.	N/A
